“Just six or seven million” — Sevilla chief Monchi refuses to ‘close the door’ on signing Anthony Martial permanently

"Just six or seven million" — Sevilla chief Monchi says a deal to sign Anthony Martial from Man Utd would be relatively cheap

Sevilla sporting director Monchi has left the door ajar on potentially signing of Manchester United loanee Anthony Martial on a permanent deal, despite the Frenchman struggling for consistency in Andalusia.

The 26-year-old relocated to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium in January from Man Utd after growing frustrated by his lack of minutes at Old Trafford in the first half of the campaign, starting just two Premier League matches before upping sticks for Spain.

Across his eight outings, both from the bench and in the starting XI, Martial managed to net just one Premier League goal. At the weekend in Sevilla’s 3-2 loss to runaway leaders Real Madrid, the misfiring forward brought up his eighth appearance in La Liga, but he is yet to score.

Problems with consistency and injuries have been the tale of Martial’s season, but despite his wavering form in the final third, Sevilla appear determined to land the Frenchman, with transfer guru Monchi stating his desire to try and wrap up a deal for him in the summer.

“His transfer was cheaper than you think, but it’s still a big bet, just six or seven million,” Monchi told Radio Sevilla.

“Unfortunately, it is difficult to analyse Martial’s performance when he was injured and now he is injured again.

“I’m not closing the door on his continuity although there’s a lot to see and discuss with the player at the end of the season.”

Martial’s disappointing — and so far ephemeral — stint in Andalusia has even led to some jeers and a few whistles from Sevilla fans when the ball reaches his proximity, showing the level of discontent some home supporters have for his current form for the club.

Whether that weighs into Martial’s thinking when a decision is inevitably made in the summer remains to be seen, but a huge clear out is expected at Man Utd when a new manager is appointed at the end of 2021/22, and expected arrival Erik ten Hag will have plenty to ponder should he arrive.
