Monaco vs Nantes build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
Monaco were one of the four sides embroiled in Ligue 1’s exciting title race last season which Lille eventually won. Niko Kovac’s side finished the campaign just five points behind the eventual winners, having to make do with a spot in the Champions League third qualifying round, ultimately paying for a poor December in which three of their five matches. This summer, Monaco had a decent pre-season, winning three of their five matches, only losing to Real Sociedad but they bounced back from that defeat to beat Sparta Prague 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round game on Tuesday.
Nantes, meanwhile, had a 2020/21 to forget as they finished inside the Ligue 1 bottom three having won just nine of their 38 matches across the campaign. They were saved from the automatic drop by the relegation play-off, beating Ligue 2 side Toulouse on away goals, and fighting to see another day. But their preparations for the new campaign have been less than ideal, losing four of their six pre-season matches, all of which have come against French opposition.
- Monaco (vs Sparta Prague): Nubel; Aguilar, Disasi, Badiashile, Henrique; Martins, Fofana, Tchouameni, Golovin; Ben Yedder, Volland.
- Nantes (vs Clermont): Lafont; Appiah, Castelletto, Pallois, Fabio; Girotto, Cyprien; Blas, Pereira de Sa, Simon; Emond.
Neither side has any fresh concerns going into the season opener, but Monaco are expected to be without Guillermo Maripan, Krepin Diatta and new signing Myron Boadu. Pedro Chirivella is suspended for Nantes.

Player to watch: Wissam Ben Yedder (Monaco)
Kovac’s side will be looking to make a quick start to the new Ligue 1 season and Wissam Ben Yedder is the man who can fire them to that first win.
The French striker was the second-top scorer in Ligue 1 last season, with his 20 goals bettered only by Kylian Mbappe’s 27 which is nothing to be ashamed about, and he slightly outperformed his xG of 19.63. But Ben Yedder wasn’t just a goalscorer, he also provided seven assists for his teammates in the league, the joint-most at Monaco alongside attacking partner Kevin Volland. Their understanding will be key this season.
