AC Milan and Napoli are set to go head-to-head in Serie A at the San Siro on Sunday evening (19:45 UK time).

At one stage this season both were unbeaten and potentially setting-up a fascinating title race but that has since fallen by the wayside. Each suffered respective setbacks recently with the hosts dropping two points on Udinese while their guests suffered a humbling 0-1 home loss against Empoli.

AC Milan team news

Things began promising for AC Milan this season. Stefano Pioli’s men won 10 of their opening 11 fixtures before entering this current slump consisting of just two wins across six games. The wheels coming off has seen the Rossoneri go from being unbeaten to suffering back-to-back losses and they come into this latest round of fixtures sitting in second and four points behind Inter Milan who are seeking to register consecutive Serie A titles. In fact, since the beginning of November, they’ve picked up eight points from six games, which leaves them 10th in the Serie A form table during this period. Milan — who are missing Ante Rebic, Rafael Leao and Pietro Pellegri as well as Simon Kjaer — have only won one of their last 13 league matches against Napoli (1-3 on the road in November 2020) and the club’s last home success in December 2014 (2-0). Back then Zlatan Ibrahimovic was plying his trade at Paris Saint-Germain but throughout his illustrious career he’s netted four times in his last five Serie A games against Napoli, including a brace in last season’s reverse fixture: among the players to have scored at least seven goals in the competition this term, the enigmatic Swede is the one with the best mins/goal ratio (one every 88 minutes).

AC Milan predicted XI: Maignan; Florenzi, Tomori, Romagnoli, Hernandez; Tonali, Kessie; Saelemaekers, Diaz, Messias; Ibrahimovic.

Napoli team news

At the conclusion of matchday 8 everything was coming up roses for Napoli who sat atop of Serie A with a perfect record. It wouldn’t last long as Luciano Spalletti’s men would surrender their 12-week lead seven rounds later and they now find themselves in fourth and seven points off the championship pace. A big reason for their slump has been this current three-game winless streak (one draw and two defeats) they are on and having won just once across six previous outings which subsequently ranks them 16th in the form table. The Neapolitan’s, who are without Lorenzo Insigne, Fabian Ruiz and Kalidou Koulibaly plus top scorer Victor Osimhen, last suffered three consecutive losses in January 2020 under Gennaro Gattuso on that occasion. Even without Osimhen they can still count on Lorenzo Insigne who has scored six goals against Milan in Serie A (which is level with Diego Maradona): in Italian top-flight history, only Luis Vinicio and Antonio Vojak (both seven) have netted more times against the Rossoneri for Napoli. It’s also worth noting their boss Spalletti has a good record against his Milan counterpart. Spalletti is unbeaten in eight Serie A duels with Pioli which consists of six wins and two draws. If that’s not impressive, Spalletti is unbeaten in his last 13 league matches against Milan (10 wins and three draws) since a 2-1 loss while coaching Roma in May 2008.

Napoli predicted XI: Ospina; Di Lorenzo, Rrahmani, Jesus, Rui; Demme, Anguissa; Politano, Zielinski, Lozano; Mertens.
