AC Milan can strengthen their hold on a Europa League spot when they host Bologna on Saturday night (8:45pm).

The Rossoneri are currently seventh in Serie A and sit six points clear of eighth-placed Sassuolo with five games remaining. As things stand that would be enough to secure Milan a spot in the qualifying stages of the Europa League, but they may also have a group stage berth in their sights as just four points separate themselves and fifth-placed Roma.

But hoping to throw a spanner in the works is former manager Sinisa Mihajlovic and his Bologna side, currently 10th, too far away to make a serious Europa League push but also safe from the relegation battle. However, Mihajlovic does not have a good record when going up against the Rossoneri, losing seven and drawing five of the 12 matches.

AC Milan & Bologna’s previous line-ups:

  • AC Milan (vs Parma): Donnarumma; Conti, Kjaer, Romagnoli, Hernandez; Biglia, Kessie; Leao, Bonaventura, Calhanoglu; Ibrahimovic.
  • Bologna (vs Napoli): Skorupski; Mbaye, Danilo, Tomiyasu, Krejci; Dominguez, Medel; Skov Olsen, Soriano, Barrow; Palacio.

Neither side has any fresh injury issues following their recent matches, although Lucas Paqueta is likely to miss out for Milan having pulled out of the squad to face Parma.

Player to watch:

Atalanta have been excellent to watch this season but not all of their attacking players were given a chance to thrive, including Musa Barrow. However, the 21-year-old has found his feet at Bologna.

In the first half of the season at Atalanta, Barrow made just seven league appearances and accumulated a total of 185 minutes. This led to Barrow being sent on loan to Bologna in January, where he has thrived mostly on the left wing but also playing through the middle.

Barrow has not missed a Serie A game for Bologna since joining, a run of 14 matches including 11 starts. During that time, the Gambian forward has scored eight goals and is Bologna’s joint-top scorer for the campaign alongside Riccardo Orsolini. Five of those eight goals have come since Serie A returned in June, including a run of scoring in four consecutive matches. Barrow was also the hero against Napoli last time out, scoring an 80th-minute equaliser to secure the draw.

Although he is only on loan at Bologna, Mihajlovic has recently spoken of his desire to sign Barrow on a permanent basis, with a view to playing him centrally in the future.

“We took him [Barrow] as a priority. Unfortunately, there was Covid-19, we didn’t have time to work on it,” Mihajlovic told DAZN.

“Now I see him more as an outsider, but next season we can make him the centre forward. Let’s see in future.”
