It was only one year ago that Matteo Arnaldi made his debut at a Grand Slam, exiting at the first qualifying round of Wimbledon, but he has been present at the US Open, Australian Open and French Open since. Although the US and Australian Opens also ended in qualifying round exits, at Roland Garros Arnaldi skipped qualifying altogether as a replacement for Andy Murray and made it to the second round in his Grand Slam main draw debut.

Unfortunately for Arnaldi, his run was ended in four sets by Denis Shapovalov, but it was good experience that the 22-year-old will be hoping carries him through to the mani draw at Wimbledon. The top seed for qualifying at Wimbledon, Arnaldi needed three sets to beat Shang Juncheng in the first round but things were slightly more straightforward in the 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over fellow Italian Federico Gaio last time out.

Frederico Ferreira Silva, meanwhile, will be looking to reach the main draw at Wimbledon for the first time in his fourth attempt. Last year there was a first qualifying round exit, a fall from 2021 when he had been one win away from the main draw. Qualifying round exits has been the story of Silva’s career so far, with just one main draw showing from 11 entries at Grand Slams.

So far this year, Silva made it to the first round of qualifying at the Australian Open and the third qualifying round at Roland Garros, beaten by Giulio Zeppieri in the latter. The Portuguese player has had a decent run in qualifying at Wimbledon so far, with straight-set victories over Damir Dzumhur and Emilio Gomez, the latter a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Prediction: Matteo Arnaldi in straight sets
