Mason Mount explains new role that has unlocked his goalscoring potential under Thomas Tuchel this season

Mason Mount says he used to set himself a target of 10 goals a season, but since changing roles under Thomas Tuchel this campaign he is eyeing up a much higher tally for Chelsea.

The 22-year-old has already matched his most prolific scoring season in the Premier League, which came during his maiden campaign at Stamford Bridge under Frank Lampard. Then, the academy graduate netted seven times, a tally he has managed to equal in 2021/22 after only 15 matches.

He actually only scored in one match across his opening 10 Premier League games this season, claiming the match ball as his hat-trick put Norwich to the sword in a 7-0 triumph on matchday nine, but since then he has enjoyed a purple patch in the final third.

Goals in consecutive games against Watford, West Ham, Leeds and Everton have taken Mount to within three strikes of his pre-season target of 10 goals. But, since a tactical shift under Tuchel, in which Mount now takes on a more advanced midfield role, he has reset his target for 2021/22.

“I am not content, I want to score more and more,” Mount told Sky Sports. “It is a big part of my game and it means a lot to me.”

A newfound responsibility further up the pitch under the German has certainly unlocked Mount’s goalscoring potential, and the England international has now detailed his shift from a deeper-lying playmaker to a “10-slash-winger”.

He added: “My first year or two I played in a bit of a deeper role as an eight. Now I am playing higher up as a 10-slash-winger so that gives me more opportunities to make it into the box. They want me in the box and being a threat going forward so that is a big focus of mine.

“I have seen that improvement in the last few games in terms of the chances I am getting now just from trying to get into the box.

“Having more touches in the opposition box shows it is working.”

The stats certainly back Mount up when examining his new forward-thinking approach in Tuchel’s system. Compared to 2019/20 (4.23) and 2020/21 (4.36), Mount is taking more touches in the opposition box per 90 minutes (5.44).

He is also registering more shots per 90 this season (2.86) compared to 2020/21 (2.55) and 2019/20 (2.44), while his shooting accuracy is up to 54.84%, managing 32.93% last term and 37.18% the season before that.
