Marseille vs Rennes build-up & previous line-ups:
A disappointing evening in Nice aside it’s been somewhat of an encouraging start for Marseille who are chasing a first Ligue 1 crown since 2010 when Mamadou Niang and Lucho González were calling the shots. Jorge Sampaoli’s side began with a 2-3 success at Montpellier before Bordeaux held them at home. The following week saw their game with Les Aiglons abandoned following crowd trouble. That was immediately put behind them as The Olympians registered back-to-back wins over Saint-Étienne and Monaco which leaves Marseille sitting third place — and four points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain — but with that game in hand.
It could have been something more on Thursday evening when Rennes snatched a draw from the jaws of victory against Tottenham; just when it seemed they were on course to pick up all three points in their Conference League meeting Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg had other ideas, that disappointment should have evaporated ahead of Ligue 1 resuming this weekend. Bruno Génésio’s men find themselves in 11th heading into matchday six. Les Rouge et Noir opened up with back-to-back draws against Lens and Brest before pulling off a narrow 1-0 success over Nantes but Rennes could not carry that momentum as they would suffer consecutive losses to Angers and Reims.

Player to watch: Hamari Traoré (Rennes)
It’s been a cavalier start to 2021/21 for Rennes skipper Hamari Traoré who goes into this latest round of fixtures having attempted 106 passes ending in the final third in Ligue 1 which is more than any other player. The 29-year-old Malian right-back is also the defender with the most shots attempted in France’s top-flight this season with seven. He’s yet to break his duck or create a single goal but it’s not for lack of trying. Since joining from Stade Reims in the summer of 2017 he’s gone on to make a total of 131 league appearances subsequently registering one goal — which came in a 2-1 home win against Marseille last December — and nine assists.
