After 15 days, 30 matches and the most intense drama, it all comes down to a straight battle over the best of 35 frames for the title and top prize of £500,000.

Selby has been here before and knows the drill inside out. Indeed, this is the four-time champion’s sixth appearance in the Crucible final.

The Jester has overcame John Higgins 13-7 in the quarter-finals, before drawing on all his mental reverse and trademark determination to battle past the in-form Mark Allen 17-15 in the semi-finals.

But if Selby has had to dig deep, that is nothing compared to Brecel’s venture to becoming the first player from mainland Europe to reach the final.

The Belgian had never previously won a match at the Crucible, but has ended the drought in style.

First, he reeled off seven successive frames from 10-6 down to deny reigning champion Ronnie O’Sullivan in the quarter-finals. Then in the semi-finals, he produced the greatest comeback in Crucible history, overturning a 14-5 deficit by winning 12 out of 13 frames for a remarkable 17-15 victory over Chinese debutant Si Jiahui.

The two players will battle it out over the best of 35 frames, with the winner lifting the trophy on Monday evening.
