Sporting CP vs Maritimo build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Last season Sporting ended a 19-year wait for a league title, finishing five points clear of Porto, ending the duopoly of the Dragons and Benfica. Sporting’s title defence has got off to a decent start, with four wins and two draws from their opening six games, but they are still below Benfica and Porto as things stand. The defending champions started the new campaign with consecutive wins over Vizela, Braga and Belenenses but then followed that up by drawing against Famalicao and Porto. Their three-game winless run continued across all competitions when Sporting were thrashed 5-1 in the Champions League by Ajax though they did get a victory on Sunday, beating Estoril Praia 1-0.

Maritimo, meanwhile, were looking to improve on last season when they escaped the relegation play-offs by just one point and one position, having lost 19 of their 34 matches (the second-most in the league). Although they currently sit 11th, it has been a similar campaign so far this time around, with Maritimo winning just one of their six games. That victory came in their second game, beating Belenenses 2-1 having lost the opening fixture against Braga. They have now drawn three of their past four league games, including a 1-1 stalemate with Porto.

  • Sporting (vs Estoril Praia): Adan; Reis, Neto, Coates; Porro, Matheus, Palhinha, Vinagre; Sarabia, Paulinho, Santos.
  • Maritimo (vs Famalicao): Paulo Victor; Winck, Zainadine Jr, Leo Andrade, Fabio China; Pelagio, Mendes; Alipour, Xadas, Henrique; Ricardinho.

Goncalo Inacio and Pote are the only absentees for Sporting, while Diogo Mendes, Stefano Beltrame and Joel Taguee are out for Maritimo.

Player to watch: Pedro Porro (Sporting CP)

Sporting go into this game still without their league top scorer Pote through injury, so they will once again be relying on their other squad members to step up.

One of the players that can is Pedro Porro, whose penalty against Estoril Praia at the weekend was enough to secure the win for Sporting. That was his first goal of the season in his second year on loan from Manchester City, but he has also recorded an assist. Porro was the man to set up Nuno Santos in Sporting’s 1-1 draw with Porto after the international break, one of 11 chances he has created across the league campaign so far, more than any other player at the club.
