Porto will look to keep pace with Tres Grandes rivals Sporting CP and Benfica when they travel to Maritimo in the Primeira Liga on Sunday at 6pm (UK time).

Sergio Conceicao’s side have made a winning start to 2021/22 as they attempt to wrestle the Portuguese top-flight title off Sporting, beating both Belenenses and Famalicao. But Benfica and the reigning champions have each started the campaign with three wins each on the bounce, so Porto must respond in Madeira.

Maritimo vs Porto build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Maritimo avoided relegation last season by the skin of their teeth, retaining their top-flight status by just one point and only one place above the drop zone. O Maior das Ilhas have started this new campaign off with a win and a draw under Julio Velazquez, which sees them currently hovering around mid-table as they look to avoid another relegation dogfight.

Porto meanwhile have enjoyed a perfect to 2021/22 with two wins on the bounce, though both Sporting and Benfica are currently on a tear of three straight wins, so the onus is on Dragoes at the Estadio do Maritimo to respond and keep pace with the early runaway leaders.

  • Maritimo (vs Belenenses): Victor; Saenz, Junior, Andrade; Winck, Xadas, Rossi, Mendes, Costa; Alipour, Vidigal.
  • Porto (vs Famalicao): D Costa; Mario, Mbemba, Pepe, Manafa; Otavio, B Costa, Uribe, Diaz; Martinez, Taremi.

The hosts will not be able to call upon injured duo Joel Tagueu and Stefano Beltrame, while Porto will travel to Madeira without Marchesin and Shoya Nakajima.

Player to watch: Toni Martinez (Porto)

After biding his time at the Estadio do Dragao, Toni Martinez looks set to lead the line for Porto this season on a regular basis. The Spaniard managed just six league starts last season, but has already been entrusted with a first-team berth in Porto’s two openers this campaign, justifying his selection with three goals. There was clamour for the 24-year-old to be handed more showings during his three-year stint at West Ham, but those were not forthcoming and the Valencia academy graduate had to endure multiple loan spells away from east London. Now that he has settled, Martinez looks a deadly prospect in the final third, a natural goalscorer, which is exactly the sort of player David Moyes has been looking for this summer to compete with Michail Antonio, but to no avail. The Hammers may come to regret letting Porto’s current poacher go if he continues in this fashion.
