Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Marcus Rashford sustained a back injury in Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Wolves and is unsure whether he will be fit for Sunday’s showdown against Liverpool.

The Red Devils booked their passage to the FA Cup fourth round after edging past Wolves in a tight replay, but the night was somewhat tarnished by the forced withdrawal of talisman Rashford.

The England international started the game on the bench but was brought on in the 64th minute with the score locked at 0-0. Solskjaer’s decision to introduce his star forward yielded an immediate response as the hosts broke the deadlock just three minutes later through Juan Mata.

However, Rashford would go down injured in the 80th minute after a rather innocuous challenge from Matt Doherty, and ultimately came off for Jesse Lingard after experiencing some discomfort in his back.

He headed straight for the tunnel with a member of the club’s medical staff, and is now a doubt for Sunday’s North West derby against Liverpool in the Premier League.

Speaking after the game, Solskajer told reporters Rashford picked up a recurrence of a back injury that he had been struggling with, saying: “Yeah [bringing him on] backfired but you have to go for it once in a while. It seems he has a knock and he couldn’t run.

“Lets test him in the next couple of days and hopefully he’ll be ok for Sunday but I don’t know.

“He has struggled with a couple of knocks with his back lately and he got another one tonight which didn’t help.”

Rashford was withdrawn on the hour mark against Norwich on Saturday with a similar back issue, but he immediately eased fears by tweeting: “Fancied a hat-trick today but busy few weeks for us. Just a precaution and looking forward to getting back at it Wednesday.”

Man Utd fans will now be waiting with bated breath as to whether the in-form forward sends out a similar message tonight with Liverpool on the horizon.
