Real Madrid entered their opening round Liga ACB playoff matchup with Manresa ripe, if not for outright defeat, then at least for an early wobbly patch.
Last Saturday (21 May) Madrid suffered a gutting one-point defeat in the EuroLeague final to Turkish side Anadolu Efes, in a game in which they’d been positively horrific on offense. Making matter worse was the fact that they’d then had to travel home from Belgrade, and tip off their domestic Liga ACB playoff campaign (as the #2 seed) against Catalan side (and #7 seed) Manresa.
That awful performance in the Europa League Final aside Real Madrid entered the game in fantastic form. Manresa, meanwhile, had scuffled in the regular season’s final weeks with four losses in their last five, but this was a side that had not only had nearly a week and a half to rest and prepare, but had actually beaten Los Blanocs in Madrid, and played them very tough in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. if ever a set of circumstances were seemingly conspiring to help a heavy underdog keep an away game close, this seemed to be it.
That read on the situation proved highly optimistic and short-lived. Madrid took a seven-point lead after the first quarter, expanded it to 19 by halftime, and had all but ended the game as a contest after three quarters, when they led by 22 points. They’d ultimately cruise to a comfortable 93-76 victory.
Both sides shot an identical 9-of-25 on 3-pointers in that contest, and Madrid turned the ball over 13 times, compared to just four from Manresa. So, where exactly did this thing turn into a blowout? In the paint.
Madrid’s play inside, defensively and offensively, set the tone and allowed them to dominate. On two-point field goals, while Manresa were held to just 22 makes on 52 attempts (42.3%), Madrid made a staggering 23 of 37 attempts (62.2%). And Madrid further pressed their advantage inside by getting to the free throw line 24 times (compared to just eight for Manresa), and making 20 of those attempts..
Real Madrid predicted starting lineup: Nigel Williams-Goss, Fabien Causeur, Ádám Hanga, Edy Tavares, Guerschon Yabusele
Manresa probable starting lineup: Joe Thomasson, Dani Perez, Chima Moneke, Elias Valtonen, Ismael Bako

On Saturday afternoon series shifts the best of three series shifts to Manresa (about 60 kilometers north of Barcelona). There is, of course, reason to believe that the home side will put forth a stronger, more competitive effort.
However, I’m not so optimistic that Manresa will find the twelve points of improvement on their home floor that would be required to merely cover the point spread, let alone the eightteen that would be needed to actually reverse the Game 1 result. Having watched Manresa squander that huge situational advantage without even putting a scare into Madrid, it’s tough to construct a case that, on even footing in terms of rest and preparation, Manresa, on current form, can hang with Madrid.
