Man Utd vs Newcastle build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Man Utd have made a solid start to the new Premier League campaign, taking seven points from three games and conceding just two goals. But whereas in recent years, finishing in the top two or three might have been acceptable, nothing less than winning a first title since 2013 will do this time around given the summer transfer business conducted by the Red Devils.

Things have been considerably less promising for Newcastle, who sit 17th in the table with just a single point from their opening three matches. That did come in their last match against Southampton, though the Magpies twice threw away a second-half lead to leave the game with a draw. Though not much is expected of Newcastle in this match, supporters won’t suffer poor results for very long and Steve Bruce knows it.

  • Man Utd (vs Wolves): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Maguire, Shaw; Pogba, Fred; James*, Fernandes, Sancho*; Greenwood.
  • Newcastle (vs Southampton): Woodman; Fernandez, Lascelles, Schar; Murphy, Willock, Longstaff, Almiron, Ritchie; Wilson*, Saint-Maximin.

Ronaldo is expected to make his second Man Utd debut from the start after coming home early from international duty to get stuck into training. Jadon Sancho is a doubt after pulling out of the England squad with a knock, as is Scott McTominay. Dan James started against Wolves but will obviously not retain his place after moving to Leeds United.

Jonjo Shelvey is sidelined for Newcastle, who will hope Isaac Hayden can return to bolster the midfield. Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser both miss out due to injury.

Cristiano Ronaldo makes his long-awaited Man Utd return

There’s no getting away from it, Saturday is ‘Ronaldo Day’ in the Premier League. The Portuguese icon returns to Old Trafford 12 years, 551 goals, 22 trophies and four Ballon d’Ors later following his switch to Real Madrid in 2009 — truly ridiculous figures when considering what he mopped up during his first spell with United.

At 36, Ronaldo is a very different player than the one we last saw in the Premier League. But he remains a force of nature few on the planet can live with and an absolutely mechanical goalscorer. Speaking to United’s official website last week, Ronaldo said he can be ‘counted on’ for whatever Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants as the Red Devils seek to end their long title drought.

“As you know, I played with him (Solskjaer) for two or three years at Manchester United so I have a good relationship with him but now with a different role, I’m a player and he’s a coach,” said Ronaldo.

“But it doesn’t matter, my relationship with him is great and as I say before, I’m there in Manchester to help the team achieve his results and the coach can count on me for whatever he wants. So I’m available for everything.”

During his previous spell at Old Trafford, Ronaldo faced Newcastle 11 times across all competitions, winning 10 of those meetings and drawing the other, while notching six goals and five assists. It feels almost inevitable that he’ll return with a bang on Saturday.
