Two of England’s oldest and fiercest rivals go head-to-head in the Premier League as Manchester United take on Liverpool this afternoon.

The Reds will be hoping to extend their eight-point lead at the top of the table, while also looking to increase the widening chasm between themselves and United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men desperately need points having failed to win any of their last three league games, but Liverpool are perhaps the worst possible opponent to face given their current form.

Ones to watch

Man Utd: Scott McTominay

Scott McTominay has become something of a leader for United in midfield. His place in the team might be down to a lack of other quality options, but he has deservedly been keeping out players the club spent big on, such as Fred and Nemanja Matic.

As he showed against Arsenal, McTominay is able to put his mark on a big game when needed. United will need every bit of his endeavour and application if they are to get any kind of result here.

Key stat: Aston Villa’s John McGinn (72) is the only central midfielder in the Premier League who has won more duels this season than McTominay (66).

Liverpool: Trent Alexander-Arnold

Fresh from confirming his place in the Guinness World Records for registering the most assists for a defender in the Premier League last season (12), Trent Alexander-Arnold is bound to be a threat on Sunday.

The Liverpool star still can’t quite dislodge Kieran Trippier as England’s right-back, but that will only make him more determined to improve, particularly defensively. That said, it’s his attacking ability United will have to be wary of this weekend.

Key stat: Only Kevin De Bruyne (29) has created more chances in the Premier League this season than Alexander-Arnold (28).

Squawka prediction

Liverpool will be desperate to make it nine wins from nine and keep up their 100% start to the season, especially against rivals Man Utd. The hosts won’t want to be embarrassed in front of their own fans so they will do all they can to get among the goals, but Liverpool will probably have just too much for Solskjaer’s men.

Scoreline prediction: Man Utd 1-2 Liverpool
