Ajax youngster Dillon Hoogewerf has revealed he is set to join Premier League club Manchester United via an Instagram post.

The 16-year-old Dutchman is set to relocate to England after turning down the chance of penning professional terms at his boyhood club.

Who is Dillon Hoogewerf? Four things to know…

  • Born: February 27, 2003
  • Birthplace: Almere
  • Position: Centre-forward
  • Youth appearances (goals): 29 (10)

His departure will come as a blow to Ajax who felt he was on a steady pathway to their first team. Highly thought of, following an impressive start to his youth career, Hoogewerf is expected to join United’s academy before dreaming of reaching the Red Devils senior team.

There was widespread speculation last month that he would join the record 20-time English champions and he has now appeared to validate those reports by uploading a clip to Instagram of him wearing a United kit after initially donning an Ajax shirt.

Said Ouaali, head of Ajax’s youth academy, was reluctant to see him go, but resigned to this fate.

“Dillon has indicated last week that he will leave the club,” he told Ajax TV.

“He is leaving for a foreign club. We wish him a lot of success and know that we have done everything to keep him. He may ultimately make the choice and choose a foreign adventure.”

A path well-travelled

Hoogewerf will not be the first Ajax academy graduate to leave the Amsterdam giants for Old Trafford. He follows the path walked previously by Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Millen Baars.

Of the pair, only Fosu-Mensah has played senior football with United having made 21 appearances to date, although his Red Devil future is in doubt this summer.
