Man City team news vs Real Madrid

  • Ins: None
  • Outs: Joao Cancelo
  • Doubts: Kyle Walker, John Stones

Pep Guardiola has revealed that John Stones and Kyle Walker are still doubts to face Real Madrid on Tuesday, after only returning to training on Monday, while Joao Cancelo is suspended.

One man that should be in line to start, however, is Raheem Sterling who has been one of the constants in Guardiola’s XIs across the campaign – not often dropping out when the big games come. In the Champions League this season, Sterling has scored three goals and provided two assists to help Man City reach this stage, and he’ll be looking to add to that tally against Real Madrid – particularly the goals.

Sterling’s goal against Sporting CP in the last 16, a cracking effort as Man City won the first leg 5-0 was his 24th in the Champions League, moving him level with Paul Scholes as the second-highest scoring Englishman.

The only English player to have scored more goals in the Champions League is Wayne Rooney on 30, and Sterling is hoping he can bridge that gap even just a little this week.

“It’s like anything… When you make your debut, then it’s the next thing: score your first goal,” he told reporters.

“And as a human, you always look to be better and improve. I always try and see… As a player, a forward, to be playing and scoring and making assists and contributing to the team is a massive thing. It’s where you get your confidence from. That’s what I am out there for.

:It’s a team full of competition. It’s the competition that makes you thrive. When you are performing you want to keep scoring and making assists. Sometimes you have to understand there’s a lot of great players in the team.

“I’m playing and contributing a lot more [than last season]. I am in a good mood, good spirits. The team is in the semi-final of the Champions League and fighting for the title. I couldn’t ask for much more. I am in good spirits.

“If I can get the English record, that’s what I will do.”
