Liverpool predicted XI v Man City: Team news as Phil Foden hails "one of the best"

Published: 12:07, 9 April 2022

Liverpool travel to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday to face Manchester City in what is being billed as a potential Premier League title decider (4:30pm kick-off UK time).

Jurgen Klopp’s side are just one point behind Premier League leaders Man City going into this clash, and have won their past 10 league matches to capitalise on the Citizens dropping points in recent weeks.

Liverpool team news vs Man City: Foden hails “one of the best” Alexander-Arnold

  • Ins: None
  • Outs: None
  • Doubts: None

Liverpool have no injury concerns going into this game, with Fabinho set to be available after suffering a cut to his head in the Reds’ Champions League win over Benfica in midweek.

As a result, it may be pretty straightforward to predict how Liverpool will line up as Klopp certainly has his favoured XI. The biggest question mark will come in who joins Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in attack, with Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz all fighting it out for that final spot.

One man who definitely doesn’t need to worry about his position or place in the team, however, is Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Englishman is one of the best right-backs in the world and Liverpool have very little option in terms of replacing him, though why would they want to?

Alexander-Arnold has made a name for himself over the past few years as a creative king, and he currently leads the Premier League for assists this season, recording 11 so far. And he has an admirer in the Man City team, in the form of Phil Folden.

“I love the way Trent passes the ball,” Foden, who has played alongside Alexander-Arnold for England, told Sky Sports.

“I think he is one of the best passers I have ever seen. I do like watching him play.”

Foden wasn’t the only Man City man to praise Alexander-Arnold ahead of this weekend, either. Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Pep Guardiola highlighted the right-back as one of Liverpool’s key players in their build up, which Man City will have to be wary of.

“We know we are going to defend parts and sit back. Not because we want but almost impossible for what they do,” Guardiola told reporters.

“They make the pitch wider and higher, quality in the middle. Four, five years ago they were more direct, not too much between the lines.

“Now they have a good build up with Alisson, [Joel] Matip, Thiago drops. Threats in behind, Alexander-Arnold is like an exhibition, deep runners in behind. Set pieces, every corner is a threat. The taker is good and the movement, of course they are there.”

Predicted Liverpool XI vs Man City:

  • Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Matip, Robertson; Thiago, Fabinho, Keita; Salah, Jota, Mane. (4-3-3).
