Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola is ruing the fact that Phil Foden, John Stones and Ilkay Gundogan have not travelled with the Premier League champions as they’ve not met US entry requirements, so instead they’ve linked up with City’s under-23s in Croatia, while Aymeric Laporte remains at home due to injury.
“Yes it’s disappointing, I would like them to be here,” he told reporters.
“Since our second season when we ended up with 100 points that was the only season when we were all together. Since then it’s always been four players arriving and then a week later another one. We started the season with incredible problems. Every year we drop points.
“This season I thought maybe we will be all together but due to the personal situation of these players. But it’s what it is, we are going to move forward and we have to adapt. Pre-season there can be three, four, five weeks but now it’s over.
“But they are fit, they are training with the Under 23s and they’ll come back and join us and they’ll be fine.”

With one eye on América’s next league game with Tijuana, head coach Fernando Ortiz is expected to make full use of his squad. Veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa should once again lead the Mexican outfit while striker Henry Martin looks to be a thorn in City’s defence. Last time out against Chelsea, which saw them suffer a 2-1 loss, Jurgen Damm came into the starting XI and he’s expected to retain his spot up-top. Jonathan dos Santos, who previously worked under Guardiola at Barcelona, could feature in América’s midfield.
