Manchester City playmaker Bernardo Silva has donated his man of the match award to teammate Phil Foden following their 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
Pep Guardiola’s side defeated Mauricio Pochettino’s men to ensure they jumped above Liverpool once again to the top of the Premier League table.
Silva awards gold for Foden: Five things you need to know…
- Manchester City defeated Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 this afternoon at the Etihad, returning to the top of the Premier League.
- Phil Foden scored after just five minutes with a brilliant diving header, assisted by Sergio Aguero.
- The goal marked Foden’s first Premier League strike for Manchester City.
- City overcame midweek disappointment – losing to Spurs in the Champions League – to keep the title-chase in their hands.
- Silva has recently been nominated for both PFA ‘Player of the Year’ and ‘Young Player of the Year’.
City responded in the perfect manner following their previous clash with Tottenham Hotspur early this week, where they lost out 4-4 on away goals to Spurs in the Champions League quarter-finals amid an entertaining match culminating in VAR heartache.
Bernardo provided a performance of the highest quality, providing an excellent performance on the right side of City’s attack, teasing Spurs full-back Ben Davies throughout.

His performance deserved the man of the match award but the Portuguese international insisted that Foden was the only true recipient of the award.
Speaking after the victory as Bernardo was given the award, he said: “I would like to hand it over to Phil because I honestly think he deserves it.
“He is so young, he is a fantastic player and this one’s for you. He scored the winner so congratulations!”

Bernardo shouldn’t have won MOTM?
The majority of people who watched City’s victory against Spurs this afternoon would be in agreement that Bernardo was one of – if not the – best player on the pitch.
However, the 24-year-old clearly felt that match-winner Foden was the man more deserving of the title.

One man who disagrees with both choices if Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech who put forward his nominee for MOTM.
Clearly staying loyal to the goalkeeper’s union, the former Chelsea shot-stopper revealed that he felt City’s ‘keeper Ederson was the best player on the pitch, making several saves en-route to a vital three points for his side.
Great performance from him but the MoTM was Ederson 💯

Cech published a tweet saying: “Great performance from him [Bernardo] but the MoTM was Ederson”
The Gunners ‘keeper – who has won the Premier League title four times in his career – was right in his support for the Brazilian, whose fantastic ability kept Tottenham at bay and ensured City secured their 10th straight Premier League victory as the season comes to a close.
