Malmo vs Chelsea live stream & team news: Tuchel looking for more consistent threat from his forwards

Published: 18:00, 1 November 2021

Chelsea face an away trip to Malmo in the Champions League on Tuesday at 5.45pm, looking to keep up the pressure on group-toppers Juventus.

The reigning European champions currently sit second in Group H, with Massimiliano Allegri’s Old Lady in the box seat having won all three of their games. Thomas Tuchel will be hoping to repeat their 4-0 demolition of bottom club Malmo from a fortnight ago in west London.

Malmo vs Chelsea build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Malmo entered Group H of the Champions League not expected to cause much of a storm, and that is exactly what has happened thus far at the midway point of the first phase. Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side have lost all three of their matches so far without putting up much of a fight, with the Swedish outfit enduring the lowest expected goals total (0.99) among all teams in the Champions League this season, while they’re one of only three teams yet to score.

Chelsea meanwhile have been emphatic, having dispatched Malmo in the reverse fixture and Zenit Saint Petersburg in their curtain-raiser as European champions. A 1-0 defeat to Juventus in Turin remains the only blemish on their early Champions League CV, so Tuchel will be determined to ensure his side avoid a banana skin here and keep up the pressure on their Italian counterparts as they look to usurp the Old Lady for top spot in the group.

  • Malmo (vs Sirius): Dahlin; Larsson, Ahmedhodzic, Moisander, Rieks; Innocent, Pena, Berget, Nalic, Birmancevic; Abubakari.
  • Chelsea (vs Newcastle): Mendy; Christensen, Silva, Rudiger; James, Kante, Jorginho, Chilwell; Ziyech, Hudson-Odoi, Havertz.

Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner sustained injuries in the home fixture to Malmo and remain sidelined here, with Mateo Kovacic joining them on the treatment tables, as well as Mason Mount, who missed the Newcastle win through illness and is unlikely to be risked here. Christian Pulisic has returned for Chelsea, wihle Ola Toivonen and Jonas Knudsen are unavailable for Malmo.

Tuchel calls for consistency from forwards

Having watched Reece James notch a brace at the weekend, and Jorginho — last season’s top goalscorer in the Premier League for Chelsea — put the gloss on a 3-0 win at St. James’ Park, Tuchel has urged his forward players to step up and start taking their chances, rather than relying on goals from further back.

Lukaku has struggled since making a blistering start to his Chelsea return, while Werner’s own struggles in front of goal have been well-documented since he joined the club from RB Leipzig. Hakim Ziyech meanwhile couldn’t buy a goal at the weekend, despite several attempts on Karl Darlow’s net.

“If you want to reach the highest level in any competition you need consistent goalscoring threat from your strikers,” Tuchel said.

“We hope we can have our strikers at the end of the season on top of the list.”

Despite the suggestion that his frontline players are not posing a threat on a regular enough basis, Tuchel went on to add that he does not even consider his wing-backs “defenders”, with the suggestion that they are much more involved in attacking play, rather than the more rough-and-tumble aspects of the sport.

“The statistic would look a bit different if you maybe interpret the wing-backs more as midfielders,” he said “If you play in a back three it is not really a full-back position and there are more midfield positions.

“I would not call them defenders. Although they have to defend in some moments they are more free to attack as they have a shorter distance to goal than they would do as a full-back. It is necessary that they are included and that we bring them to the box at the end of our attacks to increase the goal threat. I am happy when we create chances and when we have five or six players in the box to be dangerous.”
