Last season Maccabi Tel Aviv made it to the quarter-finals of the EuroLeague, breaking a six-year run of ending the competition at the end of the league campaign – or the first round when it still operated a two group stage format. This year they will be looking to make it two quarter-final appearances in a row, while also hoping to end their nine-year wait for a EuroLeague title.
The Israeli club, who have six EuroLeague titles overall, opened the 2022/23 campaign with the narrowest of victories, beating Zalgiris 84-83 thanks to a pair of Alex Poythress free throws with just over a minute to go. In their next game, however, defeat came to Fenerbahce with Maccabi Tel Aviv paying for a poor first half. Maccabi Tel Aviv did bounce back in their next three matches, beating AS Monaco, LDLC ASVEL and Panathinaikos but that winning run came to an end last time out as Baskonia took a commanding 116-87 victory – just the third time a team has allowed 100 points in a game this season.
Barcelona, meanwhile, have reached the playoffs in each of the past three seasons they have taken place and were in the final four in 2020/21 and 2021/22. In 2020/21 they finished as runners-up to Anadolu Efes, while last season they were beaten by Real Madrid in a semi-final Clasico but still managed to seal third with a win over Olympiacos.
The Spanish side started their quest for a third EuroLeague title in defeat, losing 70-80 to Olympiacos at home, but they bounced back with a massive victory in their next game. While the scoreline was close at 75-73, Barcelona got their first EuroLeague win of the season by beating rivals Real Madrid in the opening Clasico. They then followed that up by beating Bayern Munich, but their winning run stopped at two thanks to a defeat to Zalgiris. Barcelona go into this game on another two-match winning streak, beating Olimipia Milano and Fenerbahce, the latter a 81-80 victory which handed the Turkish side their first defeat of the season.
