Luton v Chelsea predicted XIs: Team news as Tuchel updates on Mount mentality after EFL Cup defeat

Published: 18:48, 1 March 2022

Chelsea will be looking to reach the FA Cup quarter-final for the third consecutive season when they travel to face Luton Town on Wednesday at 7:15pm (UK time).

The Blues go into this game off the back of a disappointing EFL Cup final exit, losing to Liverpool on penalties but there will be very little time for them to react with Luton looking to pile on the misery. Chelsea, who have finished runners-up in each of the past two seasons, have beat Chesterfield and Plymouth to reach the fifth round while Luton have knocked out Harrogate Town and Cambridge United.

Luton team news vs Chelsea: Lansbury and Adebayo hoping to be fit

  • Ins: None
  • Outs: Sonny Bradley, Jordan Clark, Luke Berry, Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu
  • Doubts: Henri Lansbury, Elijah Adebayo

Henri Lansbury came off injured for Luton in their Championship win over Derby at the weekend and is a doubt for the visit of Chelsea, as is Elijah Adebayo – though both will be hopeful of at least making the bench. However, Luton are still without Sonny Bradley, Jordan Clark, Luke Berry and Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu.

Chelsea team news vs Luton: James to miss out despite recent injury return

  • Ins: None
  • Outs: Reece James, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech, Andreas Christensen, Trevoh Chalobah
  • Doubts: Cesar Azpilicueta

Thomas Tuchel has admitted Reece James may not feature against Luton after making his return in the EFL Cup defeat to Liverpool on Sunday. The wing-back was only put on the bench with the intention of playing 20 minutes but ended up on the pitch for around 70 after coming on to replace the injured Cesar Azpilicueta. Hakim Ziyech, Trevoh Chalobah and Ben Chilwell will also miss out due to injury, while Tuchel revealed there were a number of other doubts due to physical overloads.

One player that will be pushing for a start is Mason Mount, who missed a big chance in the EFL Cup defeat before coming off for Timo Werner with 15 minutes of normal time left. The Englishman wasn’t the only Chelsea player to miss a big chance in the match, but Tuchel believes he will have been kicking himself most.

“Nobody deserves the blame for missing a chance,” Tuchel told reporters. “I can clearly understand that one person did not want to miss the chance the very most and this is Mason. You can be sure about that but it can happen because not every chance is a goal.

“We had huge chances and Mason had huge chances to decide the match for us but he is fine. He did a strong match, he was in these situations and he arrived in good timing and good positions. That’s exactly what we wanted but we just missed a bit of luck.”
