Liverpool vs Leeds predicted XIs: Team news as Klopp issues concerning Jota and Firmino injury update

Published: 16:17, 22 February 2022

Liverpool will look to close the gap on Manchester City to just three points when they welcome Leeds to Anfield in a tasty Premier League clash on Wednesday (7.45pm kick-off, UK time).

A swathe of eyes will be in the Spanish capital as Manchester United take on Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, but there is a mouthwatering all-English affair kicking off 15 minutes prior on Merseyside as Marcelo Bielsa’s kill-or-be-killed Leeds tackle Jurgen Klopp’s full-throttle Liverpool.

The Reds will be aiming to capitalise on their game in hand on current table-toppers City — who slipped up at the weekend to Tottenham — but standing in their way are a Leeds side who have become almost synonymous with unpredictability and entertainment for the neutral. It’s a showdown that just about has it all.

Liverpool team news vs Leeds: Klopp’s injury concerns on eve of League Cup final

With the League Cup final just a few days’ away, Klopp has been dealt a huge injury blow, with both Diogo Jota or Roberto Firmino suffering casualties in the previous two games. The former came off with an agitated ankle against Inter in last week’s Champions League win at the San Siro. His replacement on the night, Firmino, has since sustained a muscle injury in the weekend’s 3-1 win over Norwich, and both have been made unavailable for this match — though Klopp refused to completely rule them out for Sunday’s Wembley encounter with Chelsea.

“No chance for tomorrow,” the Liverpool boss told reporters in his pre-match Leeds press conference.
