Liverpool will be looking to secure passage into the Champions League round of 16 when they welcome Atletico Madrid to Anfield on Wednesday evening (8pm UK time).

Jurgen Klopp’s men will reach the knockout stage with victory, subsequently completing a double over Atleti, and can secure top spot if they win and Milan denies Porto all three points in their San Siro showdown.

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid build-up & previous line-ups:

England’s record European Cup winners have started their 2021/22 campaign in scintillating form. Liverpool head into matchday four with a perfect record as well as registering 11 goals and conceding on five occasions. Last time out the Reds finally registered a Champions League win over Atletico Madrid after drawing twice and losing the same amount of matches across four previous meetings. Though it’s worth acknowledging that Liverpool have only won two of their 13 home games against Spanish opposition in European Cup history (which includes six draws and five defeats) albeit one of those successes came under Klopp’s leadership (4-0 v Barcelona in May 2019). On top of that Liverpool have only lost two of their 22 home games in the Champions League under Klopp (remaining ending in 15 wins and five draws), however one of those did come against Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, a 3-2 last 16 defeat in 2019/20 which saw the defending champions eliminated from the tournament.

This will be somewhat of a homecoming for ex-Reds marksman Luis Suárez whose recent Champions League form is concerning. The lethal Uruguayan forward has been anything but as he comes into this game having scored one goal in nine previous tournament appearances for Atlético, which means he’s averaging a goal every 650 minutes for them, but Simeone is showing no signs of concern. Firstly, they are unbeaten in their previous two Champions League games against Liverpool at Anfield, and have lost just once in the club’s last six visits to England but that failure did come most recently (2-0 v Chelsea last season). Also the Colchoneros are seeking a third consecutive road win in this competition for only the second time under their Argentine tactician (previously three between 2015 and 2016).

  • Liverpool (vs Brighton & Hove Albion): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konaté, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Keïta, Jones; Salah, Firmino, Mané.
  • Atletico Madrid (vs Real Betis): Oblak; Savic, Giménez, Hermoso; Trippier, Koke, De Paul, Carrasco; Griezmann, Correa; Suárez.

Player to watch: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

There’s no doubt who the Premier League’s most irresistible player is at the moment. Mohamed Salah ended the previous round of fixtures having now bagged 10 goals and created six more across his opening 10 appearances. His recent historic treble at Old Trafford sent shockwaves through Europe and the 29-year-old Egyptian forward has been as productive in world football’s most demanding club competition. Jurgen Klopp’s talisman is one goal behind surprise early leading marksman Sébastien Haller (six) and comes into this Wednesday meeting with Atleti having bagged 13 goals across 20 previous Champions League matches at Anfield meaning if Salah breaches Diego Simeone’s then he will equal Steven Gerrard (14) as the club’s all-time top scorer in the European Cup/ Champions League at their home venue.
