Liverpool and Arsenal meet in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final clash on Thursday at 7.45pm (UK time).

The first leg was scheduled to take place at the Emirates last week but was ultimately postponed following a request from Liverpool due to an increase in Covid-19 cases at the club. It now means the opening fixture will take place at Anfield this week, before concluding in the capital next Thursday.

Liverpool team news

The obvious absentees in Liverpool’s squad are Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, who are both away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt and Senegal respectively. Depending on how far both nations progress, they could be away until at least 6 February (the final). Naby Keita is also at Afcon 2021 so unavailable for selection here.

As far as injuries and other absences are concerned, Jurgen Klopp confirmed in his pre-match press conference that both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson trained earlier this week, so they could well feature. Both missed Sunday’s FA Cup third-round tie against Shrewsbury after testing positive for Covid-19, with the latter also missing the recent 2-2 draw with Chelsea.

Klopp also confirmed that both Thiago and Divock Origi are still nursing injuries so will sit this one out, but he has been talking up “very, very important” Takumi Minamino recently, with the Japan international expected to play a key role in the coming weeks to alleviate the absences of Mane and Salah in attack.

On Liverpool’s fixture change that will see the second leg now played at the Emirates rather than Anfield — a ground renowned for its ability to raise the roof on big occasions — Klopp conceded that it could affect the outcome of the tie, but it’s ultimately a scenario out of his hands.

He said: “Of course it makes a difference especially with the power Anfield can produce.

“But we cannot change that.

“We couldn’t play last Thursday, that’s why we have to take it like it is.”

Liverpool predicted XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Oxlade-Chamerlain; Minamino, Firmino, Jota.

Arsenal team news

Gabriel Magalhaes was set to miss last week’s initial game against Liverpool through suspension, but after that was called off, he served his one-match ban at the weekend in Arsenal’s FA Cup exit to Nottingham Forest. Emile Smith Rowe meanwhile has been nursing a tight groin, but could return here, while a slight calf agitation kept Takehiro Tomiyasu out of the Forest match, though he too is expected to make a return here.

Elsewhere, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Thomas Partey, Mohamed Elneny and Nicolas Pepe are all away at Afcon, while Mikel Arteta couldn’t confirm whether Granit Xhaka will recover in time from a positive Covid-19. “I don’t know. It will depend in the next few days how he is feeling,” Arteta said. If unavailable, there could be an option for Arteta to shift Ben White into midfield and recall Rob Holding to his backline.

Arsenal predicted XI: Ramsdale; Tomiyasu, Holding, Gabriel, Tierney; Lokonga, White, Saka, Odegaard, Martinelli; Lacazette.

Scoreline prediction: Liverpool 1-1 Arsenal
