Liverpool climbed back into the Premier League top four with a 3-1 victory at Tottenham on Thursday night.

The Reds looked back to their best as they registered a first top flight win since thrashing Crystal Palace 7-0 at Selhurst Park before Christmas.

Sadio Mane was a handful all night and the Liverpool man played a key role as the visitors forced the breakthrough. He got beyond the Spurs defence before cutting it back for Roberto Firmino to turn home on the stroke of half-time.

Jurgen Klopp’s men doubled their lead shortly after the interval when Trent Alexander-Arnold lashed it into the corner after Hugo Lloris had parried the ball back into a dangerous area.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg then gave the hosts a glimmer of hope with a fine strike from the edge of the box, but Mane restored the two-goal advantage to seal a deserved win.

It leaves Liverpool four points off Premier League leaders Manchester City, and Rio Ferdinand has warned against writing off the champions.

He told BT Sport: “Liverpool were given gifts but you’ve got to be able to take them. These guys are seasoned at knowing how to be around the top of the Premier League. When you’ve got these type of strikers, you’re always going to be in with a chance.”

Peter Crouch added: “I believed it when they were going through this bad spell. It’s going to be a struggle at times. When you’ve got the attacking talent they have on display, you cannot write them off.”
