Liverpool are not out of Timo Werner transfer race, suggests RB Leipzig chief
Liverpool are still in the race to sign striker Timo Werner, according to RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff.
Werner has bagged 19 goals in 35 games across all competitions in another stellar season but, with just one year left to run on his Leipzig contract, is expected to move on this summer.

- Werner has scored 61 goals in 112 games since joining RB Leipzig from Stuttgart in 2016.
- However, the Germany international has just one year left on his current contract.
- Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are the reported favourites to sign Werner.
- But Leipzig CEO Mintzlaff hasn’t ruled out the forward staying at his club.
- Mintzlaff also name-dropped Liverpool, PSG and Dortmund as potential destinations this summer.

Bayern Munich are reportedly in pole position to sign the 24-year-old but Mintzlaff name-dropped Liverpool among a list of European clubs who could pip the German champions to his signature.
“The situation is still the same. Timo Werner would rather not sign an extension,” Mintzlaff said. “But that could change.
“I don’t think it’s completely out of the question that he could extend his deal. We haven’t talked to Bayern Munich about Timo Werner yet.
“Maybe he doesn’t even want to go to Munich. Maybe he would rather join [Thomas] Tuchel in Paris, [Jurgen] Klopp at Liverpool or [Lucien] Favre at Dortmund.”
Werner and his Leipzig teammates will face Bayern in the DFB-Pokal final on Saturday, May 25.
Klopp insists Liverpool will retain star players this summer
So many times in the past, a successful Liverpool season has led to their star players leaving for pastures new, with Philippe Coutinho, Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres just three of the more recent names to depart Anfield.
However, Klopp has insisted this summer will be different, meaning pursuits for the likes of Werner will only be about strengthening his quad, rather than replacing the loss of a key player.
“We were always competitive. City got the points they have because we were there. They have 198 points in two years, that’s special. We made such big steps. It’s only the first step. Always after a good year, we lost key players [in the past] but we won’t [this time] so we’ll be there again.
“The team made so many big steps in the last year. The boys were all there from last season apart from Alisson. He had a big impact but all the rest were here last season.
