“I’m so emotional. I can’t really believe it. It is really a dream come true. I’m super grateful and happy,” Magda Linette said following her Aussie Open quarter-final success over Karolina Pliskova. The world number 45 had previously never gone beyond the third round of a Grand Slam across 29 attempts. In her 30th major main draw, the Pole is putting together the best Grand Slam run. Pliskova consequently became the fourth consecutive seeded player to lose to Linette in Melbourne (number 16 Anett Kontaveit, number 19 Ekaterina Alexandrova and number four Caroline Garcia). Linette previously became the ninth oldest woman in the Open Era to reach a debut Grand Slam quarterfinal.
Aryna Sabalenka, who’s chasing her first Grand Slam singles title, is the highest seed left. She made a psychological breakthrough in the quarter-final showdown with Donna Vekic, the Belarusian had five of six previous matches to Vekic, but triumphed 6-3 6-2 to set up this latest meeting with Linette, whom Sabalenka has defeated in their previous two meetings: at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo (6-2 6-1) and three years earlier in Tianjin (6-1 6-3). Sabalenka has won all of the 10 sets she’s played — and only one forced her past six games. All nine of her matches in 2023 have ended in straight-set wins the longest such streak in her career. In addition, she’s dropped only 26 games on the way to the semifinals, another career best.
