Bayer Leverkusen will be looking to keep their place in the Bundesliga top four secure when they host Wolfsburg on Tuesday evening.

Peter Bosz’s side put their destiny back in their own hands at the weekend with a 3-1 win to fellow top-four challengers Borussia Monchengladbach, in which Kai Havertz was the star of the show.

The win allowed Leverkusen to leapfrog Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig into third with just seven games remaining, although things are still tight at the top.

Wolfsburg have a European battle of their own to keep them busy for the remainder of the season, with Oliver Glasner’s men searching for a Europa League place.

They currently occupy the Bundesliga‘s final Europa League spot, in sixth, but defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday opens up the opportunity for Schalke to overtake them before Tuesday.

Bayer Leverkusen & Wolfsburg’s previous line-ups:

  • Bayer Leverkusen (vs Borussia Monchengladbach): Hradecky; Tapsoba, S Bender, Dragovic; Weiser, Aranguiz, Demirbay, Sinkgraven; Bellarabi, Havertz, Diaby.
  • Wolfsburg (vs Borussia Dortmund): Casteels; Mbabu, Pongracic, Brooks, Roussilon; Steffen, Schlager, Arnold, Mehmedi; Weghorst, Ginczek.

Although there are no new absentees following gameweek 27’s matches, both sides are expected to make changes to deal with fatigue.

Players to watch:

  • Bayer Leverkusen: Sven Bender. Leverkusen’s younger players have received a lot of attention this season for their successes on the pitch, but the backbone of the side has been just as important, including Bender. The centre-back has almost been ever-present for Leverkusen this season at the heart of their defence, having missed just 138 minutes across his 27 appearances. At 31 years of age, Bender is by no means on his way out, but the German international has provided an experienced head to lead the younger attackers in front of him alongside twin brother and club captain Lars Bender (though he is currently injured). It was fitting that Sven, who did not misplace a single pass in the first half, would put the icing on the cake that was Leverkusen‘s 3-1 win over Gladbach on Saturday, making sure of the three points through his first Bundesliga goal in nearly three years. And with his shoulder, no less.
  • Wolfsburg: Wout Weghorst is the latest on a long list of Wolfsburg strikers trying to emulate the likes of Bas Dost and Edin Dzeko. The 27-year-old
is in his second season at Wolfsburg, having joined from AZ Alkmaar in 2018, and has recorded a fairly decent return of 33 goals in 71 games across all competitions. Eleven of those goals have come in this season’s Bundesliga, in addition to another three assists, which means Weghorst has been directly involved in 38.89% of Wolfsburg’s total goalscoring in the competition so far. But like Dzeko and Dost before him, Weghorst appears to be looking at Wolfsburg as a stepping stone, eyeing a dream move to Liverpool one day. “I always found Liverpool very special,” he told Goal recently. “I still get goosebumps from ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. There are other great English clubs too, and I always liked Milan because so many Dutch played there. I am ambitious and want to get ahead. Maybe at some point play at another club, whether in Germany or in England? But at the moment it is still far away. I feel good and try to achieve the maximum here.”

Scoreline prediction: Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 Wolfsburg
