Leicester vs Man Utd build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
Leicester entered December in disappointing form, dropping from first to fourth following back-to-back defeats against Liverpool and Fulham. However, they have won three of their past four games to climb back up to second, four points behind leaders Liverpool.
Last weekend, they passed another big best, beating Tottenham 2-0 away to condemn Jose Mourinho‘s men to a second successive defeat and continue their good record against the so-called ‘Big Six’ this season. Spurs joined Manchester City and Arsenal in losing to Leicester, with only Liverpool taking all three points away from the Foxes.
The next ‘Big Six’ side to face Leicester are Man Utd, and the Red Devils are also in good form. Man Utd have been painted as a team with problems this season and, while that may have been the case in Europe, it certainly isn’t in the Premier League.
Ole Gunnar’s Solskjaer‘s men are just five points behind Liverpool with a game in hand, and are unbeaten in their past seven Premier League games, winning six. They are also on an incredible 10-game winning run away from home, now just one off the Premier League record. Add their 1-0 away win over Everton in the EFL Cup quarter-final to the mix and it’s easy to see why Solskjaer takes his side south brimming with confidence.
- Leicester (vs Tottenham): Schmeichel; Justin, Fofana, Evans, Castagne; Ndidi, Tielemans; Albrighton, Maddison, Barnes; Vardy.
- Man Utd (vs Leeds): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; Fred, McTominay*; James, Fernandes, Rashford; Martial.
Jamie Vardy is expected to be fit for the visit of Man Utd despite having to come off early in the win over Spurs last weekend, while Caglar Soyuncu faces a late fitness test but may not be rushed back for Saturday’s game.
Scott McTominay is a doubt for Man Utd with a groin issue picked up in the victory against Leeds, with the club waiting to see how he recovers.
Players to watch:
Leicester: If Jamie Vardy is indeed fit to face Man Utd this weekend, you can expect him to give the opposition defenders a tough afternoon. Even a half-fit Vardy can be good enough to break through opposition lines for a certain amount of time, and he’s always a handful to keep track of. Since Rodgers took over as Leicester manager almost two years ago, Vardy has scored 43 goals in the Premier League, more than any other player during that time frame. Vardy is also just nine behind Luis Suarez as Rodgers’ most prolific player.
Man Utd: Although Bruno Fernandes is wonderful, this weekend may be a game for Harry Maguire to show his worth. The English centre-back joined Man Utd from Leicester in 2019 for £80m, becoming the most expensive defender in the world in the process, and was placed under immediate scrutiny. But while Maguire has had some bad moments in a Man Utd shirt, they are becoming more infrequent as he grows stronger at the heart of the Red Devils’ defence. What better way to continue this than by keeping his former side from scoring?
