Manchester United will be looking to secure their first trophy since the 2016/17 season when they contest the 2022/23 League Cup final against Newcastle United on Sunday.
The Red Devils used to win trophies by the shedload under the reign of Sir Alex Ferguson but things dried up slightly following his departure. Louis van Gaal won the FA Cup in 2015/16, while Jose Mourinho led Man Utd to the 2016/17 League Cup and the Europa League.
Since then, Man Utd have reached the final of the 2017/18 FA Cup, losing to Chelsea, and the 2020/21 Europa League, losing to Villarreal. But, up against Newcastle, many feel the drought is about to come to an end.
Entering the competition in the third round, Man Utd have so far beaten Aston Villa, Burnley Charlton Athletic and Nottingham Forest to reach the final. Starring in their run, and post-World Cup, has been Marcus Rashford. The Englishman has scored 16 goals in 18 games across all competitions including four in the League Cup.
However, Rashford is a doubt for this weekend, having picked up a knock in the Europa League win over Barcelona.
“I don’t know,” Ten Hag said when asked if Rashford will be fit for the final.
“Players are now coming in [to Carrington], we have to do investigations, medical [checks]. Straight after a game you can’t say, you have to wait for medical [checks].”
Fernandes, meanwhile, scored in the semi-final win over Nottingham Forest and has had six shots on target across his last four appearances in all competitions for Man Utd.
