In one of the most exciting games of the Serie A season so far, two of last year’s top four go head to head as Lazio host Inter Milan on Sunday at 2 PM (UK time).

Both sides will undoubtedly be frustrated with the way last season ended, having been so close to eventual winners Juventus before allowing the Old Lady to scoop up yet another league title.

In their quest to overthrow Juventus, Inter have started on a positive note, winning both of their opening games so far, beating Fiorentina and Benevento. Lazio, meanwhile, started the season with a win over Cagliari but followed that up with a defeat last time out, losing 4-1 to Atalanta.

Recent history is on Lazio’s side, with the Biancocelesti winning two of the last three league meetings between these two teams, but Inter have enjoyed their trips to the Stadio Olimpico. Since the 2014/15 campaign, Inter have won four away league games against Lazio, only achieving a better record against Udinese during that time.

Lazio have also lost seven of their last 14 Serie A games, a run carrying on from last season, showing just how they slipped away in the title race.

Lazio & Inter’s previous line-ups:

  • Lazio (vs Atalanta): Strakosha; Patric, Acerbi, Radu; Lazzari, Milinkovic-Savic, Lucas, Luis Alberto, Marusic; Caicedo, Immobile.
  • Inter (vs Benevento): Handanovic; Skriniar, De Vrij, Kolarov; Hakimi, Gagliardini, Sensi, Young; Vidal; Lukaku, Sanchez.

Neither side has any fresh injury news following their most recent matches, but Antonio Conte could be tempted to rotate to allow Lautaro Martinez back into the XI.

Players to watch:

Lazio: Ciro Immobile loves scoring, that was on full display last season when he netted 36 in Serie A to take the European Golden Shoe. But there’s just something about Inter that acts almost as kryptonite for the Italian striker. In his eight appearances for Lazio against Inter so far, Immobile has scored just one goal, from the penalty spot, and that came last season. Although a penalty goal is worth no less than a normal one, the fact that the Nerazzurri have managed to keep Immobile quiet from open play must play on the striker’s mind. What will also be playing on Immobile’s mind is the performance against Atalanta last weekend, during which he missed two golden opportunities to score, first hitting the crossbar from inside the six-yard box before finding the side netting when rounding the goalkeeper. With the solitary goal so far, Immobile will no doubt hope he can finally get up and running against Inter this weekend.

Inter Milan: Another striker struggling for goals against this weekend’s opponent is Inter’s Romelu Lukaku, though he has had fewer chances to test Lazio’s defence. Since joining Inter last summer, in 173 minutes against Lazio, Lukaku is yet to score or record an assist, remarkably his worst record in the competition. But, unlike Immobile, Lukaku has started the new season on top form, already scoring three goals so far, the joint-most in Serie A. The Belgian opened the campaign with one goal in the 4-3 win over Fiorentina, equalising late on before Danilo D’Ambrosio’s winner, before bagging a brace against Benevento. If Immobile cannot improve his record against Inter, can Lukaku break his Lazio duck? Well, being named as the Europa League player of the season for 2019/20 is sure to boost his confidence.

Scoreline prediction: Lazio 1-3 Inter Milan
