Luka Modric has endorsed Real Madrid’s interest in Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe, suggesting ‘great players are always welcome at the Bernabeu’.

Mbappe, 22, has continued to go from strength to strength in France since bursting onto the scene as a precocious scoring phenom for Monaco in 2016. His latest masterclass saw him combined expertly with Neymar to take down reigning European champions Bayern Munich.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side secured a 3-3 draw with the Bavarians in the Champions League quarter-finals, progressing to the penultimate stage of Europe’s flagship competition on away goals, with Mbappe netting a brace at the Allianz Arena and setting up a date with Manchester City.

The wonder of Mbappe, though, is not just confined to continental matters, with the 22-year-old recently becoming the youngest Ligue 1 centurion, bringing up goal No. 100 in PSG’s 4-2 win over Lyon last month, reaching the milestone in trailblazing fashion.

It will come as no surprise then that some of Europe’s truly heavyweight clubs are thought to be keeping taps on the Parisian crown jewel, with Real Madrid naturally in the conversation, and there are some suggestions PSG could be willing to entertain offers with Mbappe’s contract set to expire next summer.

Los Blancos stalwart and 2018 Ballon d’Or recipient Modric recently spoke ahead of his side’s Champions League quarter-final win over Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday, and the veteran Croat gave his seal of approval towards the idea of signing Mbappe, believing “great players” are always welcome at the Bernabeu.

He told reporters: “You hear a lot of stories about the players who’ll be coming in and who’ll be leaving, but I can’t go into that.

“Mbappe is a great player and he’s proved that with his national team and PSG. Great players are always welcome at Real Madrid, but it wouldn’t be right of me to speak about players at other clubs, particularly at this stage of the season.

“We’ll have to see what happens next season, but he’s a top player and is amongst the best in the world.”

Pochettino: Both club and player are trying to come to an agreement

In a motion to quell the speculation, Pochettino recently came out and batted away suggestions his prized-asset could be on the move in the coming months.

The Argentine coach was quick to emphasise that negotiations are taking place behind the scenes, and both parties are very much working towards a viable conclusion.

Pochettino said: “The most important thing is that Kylian is quiet.

“He is quiet and focused on the team and helping them achieve their goals. Kylian is very mature despite his age.

“Both club and player are trying to come to an agreement that will see Kylian stay with us for a long time.

“It’s the desire of the club and we are working on everything.”
