Klopp says Liverpool can finally draw a line under Gerrard slip incident

Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool can finally move on from the infamous Steven Gerrard slip after seeing the funny side in Andy Robertson’s tumble during the Reds’ 2-0 win over Chelsea.

Liverpool clinched maximum reward at Anfield to leapfrog Manchester City to the top of the Premier League table, courtesy of Sadio Mane’s opener and a scintillating Mohamed Salah strike.

What is the Gerrard slip incident? Five key things to know…

1. With Liverpool chasing the title in 2013/14, Brendan Rodgers’ side welcomed Chelsea to Anfield.
2. The match came with just three matches left of the season and the Reds were in pole position to lift the title.
3. However, during the dying embers of the first half a costly Gerrard slip allowed Demba Ba to score the opening goal.
4. Chelsea went on to win the match and Man City subsequently won the title.
5. The incident rose to prominence after Gerrard was filmed screaming “we do not let this slip” after Liverpool beat Man City earlier in the season.

With Liverpool in a near-identical situation to their Premier League 2013/14 title bid, there were a few apprehensions about playing Chelsea on home territory at a similar stage of the season.

However, Klopp’s men were able to get the job done where Rodgers’ side fell short five years ago, though not without another Liverpool player losing their footing.

In the second half Andy Robertson went to cut in on his right foot before the left-back stumbled to the ground and gifted Chelsea the ball in a dangerous position.

Fortunately for the Anfield faithful, Liverpool reacted instinctively and snuffled out the danger before the Blues could mount a serious threat on goal.

And the irony was not lost on Klopp who was filmed laughing about the incident, and after the match he explained how Liverpool can now slip without fear, once and for all drawing a line under the infamous Gerrard slip.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “It’s done now. If anyone wants to sing about the slip then they should swallow it.

“We can now we can slip without anything serious happening.”

Klopp lauds Henderson influence

Jordan Henderson has played a key role for the Reds this season and received the man-of-the-match award for his efforts on Sunday.

Following the England international’s performance, Klopp was quick to highlight the importance of his skipper, saying he has been a leader since the minute he walked into the club.

When asked to compare Henderson’s leadership qualities to that of his predecessor, Klopp said: “I only know Stevie [Gerrard] as a person – I’ve no idea about his leadership skills.

“Hendo is a fantastic skipper for this club – I’ve said it from the first day. There was not one part of him that was not important. In the last three games he’s obviously on fire which is good.”
