Whichever way you look at it, Karim Benzema is one of the best strikers in world football and looks set to continue to lead the way for Real Madrid. This weekend will mark his fifth Champions League final and he’s on course to break numerous records.
Despite having over 300 senior goals to his name, Benzema is sometimes overlooked when it comes to the top strikers in the world but this season, in a campaign where he’s been the figure head for Madrid, some respect is finally being put on the Frenchman’s name.
It’s been an incredible season for Benzema, with 49 goals in 52 appearances in all competitions for club and country, and the 34 year old seems to be getting better with age with there being an improvement in his goalscoring numbers in each of the last three seasons. It’s culminated in his best goalscoring season yet and he’ll be hoping to improve further this weekend and make it at least 50 for the season.
Karim Benzema has been directly involved in 59 goals in 45 games for Real Madrid across all competitions in 2021/22 and a goal in the Champions League Final would be the crowning moment of an incredible season. Here are 7 records King Karim is chasing in Paris…

Most goals in a single Champions League knockout stage
Only two players have ever managed to score 10 goals in a single Champions League knockout stage.
▪️ Cristiano Ronaldo (10 – 2016/17)
▪️ Karim Benzema (10 – 2021/22)
One more would make Benzema a record breaker, one that would be very hard to be beaten.
10 – Karim Benzema has scored 10 goals in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages this season, the joint-most by a player in a single campaign along with Cristiano Ronaldo in 2016-17, also for Real Madrid. Pantheon. pic.twitter.com/YCMA8jVtdU

A goal in every round of a Champions League campaign
Benzema would join an elite group of strikers if he does manage to net this weekend. Only four players have been able to score in the Group Stages, Last 16, Quarter Final, Semi Final and Final of the same Champions League campaign.
▪️ Diego Milito (09/10)
▪️ Lionel Messi (10/11)
▪️ Cristiano Ronaldo (13/14)
▪️ Sadio Mané (17/18)
A goal in Paris would see Benzema’s name added to the bottom of that list.
A goal in both legs of the quarter and semi final, and the final
Neymar is the only man in history to have scored in both legs of a quarter final, both legs of a semi final and the final itself in a single campaign when he achieved the feat in the 2014/15 season. The Brazilian netted against PSG, Bayern Munich and Juventus on the way to winning the competition with Barcelona.
Benzema is only one step away from achieving the same feat:
vs Chelsea (A) – 06/04/2022
vs Chelsea (H) – 12/04/2022
vs Man City (A) – 26/04/2022
vs Man City (H) – 04/05/2022
A goal against Liverpool on Saturday evening would see Benzema feasting on a full English…

Most goals in a single Champions League campaign
Benzema has netted 15 times in the Champions League so far this season, a fantastic return already but he’ll be hoping to find the net in the showpiece final two. He currently sits in joint third for the amount of goals scored in a single campaign:
▪️ 17 – Cristiano Ronaldo (13/14)
▪️ 16 – Cristiano Ronaldo (15/16)
▪️ 15 – Cristiano Ronaldo (17/18)
▪️ 15 – Robert Lewandowski (19/20)
▪️ 15 – Karim Benzema (21/22)
A brace for Benzema would see him equal his old teammate with 17 goals in a single campaign.
20+ combined goals and assists in a single Champions League campaign
It’s not just been goals that Benzema has contributed to the team this season, he’s been involved in setting them up too. He’s been directly involved in 17 goals for Real Madrid in the Champions League this season and is approaching two other great strikers of the time in the record books, both of whom have 20+ direct goal involvements:
▪️ Cristiano Ronaldo (13/14 & 15/16)
▪️ Robert Lewandowski (19/20)
The Frenchman needs to be directly involved in three goals in the 2011/22 final to join an elite club.
Three hat tricks in a single Champions League knockout campaign
No player has ever scored three hat tricks in a single Champions League knockout stage but Benzema is mighty close to being the first man to do so:
vs PSG – 09/03/2022
vs Chelsea – 06/04/2022
Three goal against Liverpool this weekend would not only see him smash one record out of the park but two. He’d also become the first player to score a hat trick in the Champions League final….ever!
Most Champions League titles
Benzema doesn’t even have to score to break this record! If Real Madrid are the side holding aloft the famous trophy in Paris this weekend, Benzema will equal Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for most Champions League titles in the modern era.
The only problem is, so could eight of his teammates!
- Dani Carvajal
- Luka Modric
- Gareth Bale
- Toni Kroos
