In three of his previous French Open appearances Karen Khachanov has been eliminated in the fourth round. The outlier was a quarter-final berth (2019) and second round elimination last year. Khachanov, who is seeking a maiden Grand Slam semi-final outing, has been made to sweat in Paris this month. Each of his opening three outings have lasted four sets. After getting past Nuno Borges (6-3 2-6 6-4 6-4) he faced Hugo Dellien (4-6, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3) before meeting Cameron Norrie (6-2, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4).

This will be the first meeting between Khachanov and Carlos Alcaraz who is playing in his second French Open and has already improved on last year’s performance which saw him eliminated in round three. Following a comfortable opening round win over Juan Ignacio Londero (6-4, 6-2, 6-0) the Spainard was pushed all the way by compatriot Albert Ramos (6-1, 6-7, 5-7, 7-6, 6-4) but any signs of a repeat showing never came in the following round against Sebastian Korda (6-4, 6-4, 6-2).
