Jurgen Klopp insists ‘there’s no need’ for reinforcements but injuries mount for Liverpool
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has again reiterated his belief that ‘there’s no need’ for Liverpool to bring in extra bodies in midfield, but the injuries are beginning to mount — with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain limping off before half-time in their pre-season win over Crystal Palace.
Oxlade-Chamberlain, 28, was replaced by Leighton Clarkson just one minute before the interval with what looked to be a hamstring problem, with the England midfielder cutting a frustrated figure as he hobbled off.
A knee injury kept Oxlade-Chamberlain out for the first half of the last campaign and he’ll be hoping that this isn’t a serious problem ahead of the new season, amid reports he will have an important part to play in the Liverpool title bid.

Klopp has suggested multiple times this summer that Liverpool’s transfer business is complete, with Darwin Nunez, 23, joining the club for a €75m fee as well as Fabio Carvalho, 19, and Calvin Ramsay, 18.
Many have claimed that Liverpool need to bring in more bodies in midfield and, whilst it certainly does seem to be the squad’s weak point, the German is insistent that he’s happy with the options available to him at present.
“How I said if nobody wants to leave – and no player came to me with that request yet and I don’t expect it really, to be honest – there is no need for a new midfielder,” Klopp told the press ahead of their pre-season clash with Crystal Palace in Singapore.
“We cannot just add on midfielders. We respect the contracts with our boys as well, that means as long as we signed them, they get all our support – in training, between the sessions, during the games and between the games.”

“That is the situation we have; really, you can count our midfielders. And, for me, Harvey Elliott is a new signing as well, after last season how he started. He is very young, came back brilliant, then had a little low, that is completely normal after being that long out. So, really excited about seeing him.”
This was before Oxlade-Chamberlain had to be withdrawn from the match with Crystal Palace though, and that opinion about the number of bodies needed in the centre of the pitch could well change once the injury is assessed.
There have been constant links between the club and Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund, and it’s been acknowledged that the English youngster is a major target for 2023, but could a significant injury to one of the Liverpool midfield force the Anfield club to move their transfer plans ahead a year?
