Elena Rybakina has had an excellent 2023 so far, but she saw her winning run come to an end at the Miami Open last time out. Some had been backing the 2022 Wimbledon champion to mirror Iga Swiatek’s run as she beat the Pole in straight sets en route to winning the Indian Wells Masters. However, Petra Kvitova had a different idea, winning the Miami Open final in straight sets after a thrilling first-set tie break.

Attention now turns to the clay court season, and Rybakina will be hoping preparation goes well as she looks to better her third-round exit at the French Open last year. She does have previous success on clay, winning the 2019 Bucharest Open in her first WTA final, and it’s fair to say she is a much better player now. However, her good run in 2023 was not enough to lift Rybakina into the top four seeds for the Stuttgart Open, which means she has had to enter in the first round.

Jule Niemeier, meanwhile, is at the Stuttgart Open as a wildcard entry and will be hoping to cause what would be a big upset. Ranked 65th in the world, Niemeier was given her spot as one of the top two German players in women’s tennis but it’s been a tough year for the 23-year-old so far.

A first-round exit at the Australian Open was harsh, as Niemeier was pit against Swiatek, but early defeats in Lyon, Linz, Indian Wells and Miami were not good preparation for the clay court season. Niemeier was also part of the Charleston Open, the first clay court tournament of the season for the WTA, though she also lost in the first round then.

Prediction: Elena Rybakina in straight sets
