Prior to their playoff opener, Joventut Badalona and Iberostar Tenerife had met three times in the 2021-22 season – twice in the league, and once in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals. All three contests were competitive. Joventut Badalona won the first by seven points, and Tenerife actually won the next two, by margins of six and two points.

You’d never have guessed any of that based on Game 1 in Badalona.

Tenerife actually opened the scoring that evening, before getting completely blitzed by the their Catalan hosts. After conceding those opening two points, Joventut Badalona scored 27 of the next 32 in the first quarter. They scored another 27 in the second quarter, this time allowing 14, and took a commanding 54-21 lead into halftime. The second half was much was less a competition than an exercise in, depending on your perspective, damage control (Tenerife) or, for Badalona, avoiding complacency. When all was said and done, Joventut Badalona – led by Pep Busquets and Joelle Barra, who each scored a game-high 14 points and power forward Derek Willis, who was an awesome +32, in just 23 minutes of action – were victorious by a staggering 100-68 score line.

It’s a result that’s difficult to reconcile. On the one hand, Tenerife are a quality side – one that won 21 of 34 regular season games and qualified for these playoffs fifth, just two points behind number fourth-seeded Joventut Barcelona – whom they’ve beaten twice in three meetings in the past seven months. In this scenario, the best thing to do with a result like Game 1’s is to acknowledge it… and then simply never revisit it, and bury it as deeply as possible in history.

At the same time, Game 1 did happen. And while it was in all likelihood a one-off calamity, it’s also one that’s pushed Tenerife to the brink in these playoffs. And, while Tenerife can take comfort in the fact that travelling to the Canaries often has a visible impact on the performance of mainland Spanish clubs (football or basketball), almost regardless of quality, they too now must make the same keep the same taxing travel schedule as their opponents.

Once back home, Tenerife will be looking to point guard Marcelo Huertas (who scored14 points of his own in Game 1), shooting guard Sasu Salin (who struggled terribly) and veteran power forward Aaron Doornekamp to find their stride early and erase the memories of Game 1.

Joventut Badalona predicted starting lineup: Andres Feliz, Pau Ribas, Joel Parra, Derek Willis, Ante Tomic

Tenerife probable starting lineup: Marcelo Huertas, Sasu Salin, Dejan Todorovic, Aaron Doornekamp, Fran Guerra

Making a prediction for this game is a balancing act between acknowledging the utter dominance we witnessed in Game 1 – while also appropriately discounting it in favor of what we actually know to be true over larger samples.

Again, it’s important to remember that Tenerife have been a quality side all season, and that catastrophic results can befall anyone, on any given day. Also, it’s worth noting that few mainland teams’ performances travel seamlessly to the Canaries. At the same time, that Tenerife are such sizable favorites (+175 to win out right) does seem to represent decent value.

That being said, it’s difficult to pick an outright winner with any real conviction. Regardless of victor, the most likely outcome for Game 2 is a nip=tuck contest in which both teams struggle to get on track offensively after making the trip south from Catalunya.

Prediction: Iberostar Tenerife and Joventut Badalona to combine for UNDER 157.5 points.
