Jose Mourinho sympathises with Pochettino after Champions League celebratory tears

Jose Mourinho completely understands why Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino teared up following the club’s fantastic turnaround against Ajax.

At half-time of the second leg in Amsterdam, Spurs were 3-0 down but managed to score three goals in 45 minutes to book their place in the Champions League final.

Speaking after Tottenham’s triumph over Ajax in the most unlikely of circumstances, former Manchester United and Chelsea manager Mourinho – who has won two Champions League titles in his career so far – commented on Pochettino’s emotional response to the club’s success.

Stating that managers can sometimes feel lonely in the job, Mourinho completely gets the tears shed by the Argentine. He said: “They don’t know. Sometimes the football fans think they care more than us, they think it’s just them.

“[Fans think:] ‘Win a big match and enjoy, lose a match and go sad but tomorrow is another day.’ Sometimes they don’t know what we are like behind the scenes.

“[Coaches] are normally a very lonely person, in that football consumes a lot.

“It [Pochettino’s tears] is a very beautiful way to show the world that for us managers, it means much more than for the ordinary fan, in defeat and in victory too.”

Two nights of emphatic comebacks

Wednesday night in Amsterdam was the setting for this epic Tottenham Hotspur comeback, a sequence of events that few would have predicted at the half time point in the second leg.
