Jose Mourinho believes Christian Eriksen can leave Tottenham Hotspur with his “head up” if he decides to join Inter Milan in the current transfer window.

The Denmark international started for Spurs during their 2-1 FA Cup third-round replay win over Middlesbrough on Tuesday evening.

Is Eriksen Inter bound? Five things to know…

  • Eriksen has made over 300 appearances for Spurs since joining from Ajax in 2013.
  • He made 12 continental appearances last season, helping the club reach the Champions League final.
  • But Eriksen’s contract is due to expire in the summer, with the likes of Real Madrid and Inter linked.
  • It’s believed Inter lodged an £8.5m offer on Tuesday but Spurs are thought to be holding out for twice that amount.
  • Mourinho believes Eriksen can leave Spurs with pride, should that be the outcome.

However, with his contract expiring in the summer, rumours regarding a departure have been gathering pace, with Eriksen often being linked with Real Madrid.

More recently, Antonio Conte’s Inter have become frontrunners for his signature and according to reports, an £8.5m offer has been lodged for the playmaker — although Spurs are thought to be holding out for twice that amount.

Despite the uncertainty regarding his future, Mourinho chose to field Eriksen from the start against Boro on Tuesday and believes his professionalism will allow him to leave the club with pride, should that be the outcome.

“He played very well. Played very well, very professional which is what I expect from him,” said Mourinho after Tuesday’s match.

“If his decision is to leave, I think he has to leave with his head up, if he gives everything which is what he tries to do for the team.

“Fans, it’s always to respect, we have to respect but I think the boy did it for us today.”

Tottenham travel to in-form Watford on Saturday.
