Fourth seed Jessica Pegula will be looking to do what she has never done before this week and reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam. Although she is among the best WTA players in the world right now, the American hasn’t made it past the quarter-finals at any of the four major tournaments. The Australian Open has been pretty kind to Pegula, with three consecutive quarter-final runs but it wasn’t until last year that Pegula had some luck elsewhere, with quarter-final finishes for the first time at the French and US Opens.
Going into 2023, Wimbledon was the one quarter-final that alluded Pegula, with exits in the first, second and third round. But this time she has finally done it. The American opened her tournament with a three-set victory against compatriot Lauren Davis, the only time she has dropped a set at Wimbledon so far. After Davis, Cristina Bucsa, Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Lesia Tsurenko have all fallen in straight sets, with the latter a 6-1, 6-3 victory for Pegula to secure a debut in the Wimbledon quarter-finals. Can she make it to a first semi-final?
Looking to end the dream this week is Marketa Vondrousova, who is also enjoying her best run at Wimbledon — but she has done something Pegula has never achieved. In 2019 Vondrousova not only won her quarter-final at the French Open, but she went all the way to the final before eventually losing to Ash Barty.
However, that proved to be an exception rather than the norm for the 24-year-old, who hadn’t made it past the fourth round of a Grand Slam since reaching the final of the French Open, until now. Unseeded at Wimbledon, Vondrousova has been the underdog for a lot of her matches but beat Peyton Stearns, 12th seed Veronika Kudermetova and 20th seed Donna Vekic without dropping a set. In the fourth round, 32nd seed Marie Bouzkova looked strong in claiming the first set but Vondrousova eventually came back to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Prediction: Jessica Pegula in three sets
