Jelena Ostapenko will be hoping she can add a second French Open crown at Roland Garros this year, as she looks to climb up the WTA rankings. The Latvian won the French Open in 2017 but hasn’t made it past the third round since, even bowing out at the earliest possible stage on defence of her title in 2018.

At the Australian Open earlier this year there was a quarter-final exit for Ostapenko, beaten by Elena Rybakina in straight sets and that was the same result in the semi-finals of the Italian Open last time out. Ostapenko put the Italian Open firmly behind her in the first round at Roland Garros, with a comfortable 6-3, 7-5 victory over Tereza Martincova.

Peyton Stearns, meanwhile, is on her French Open debut and making just her second ever appearance at a Grand Slam after reaching the first round of last year’s US Open. This has been a good year for the American, who reached the final of the Copa Colasnitas, only losing to Tatjana Maria in three sets.

While there will have been sadness in the defeat at her first final, the run to the championship match saw Stearns enter the top 100 first the first time, which also led to direct qualification to the main draw of the French Open. Like Ostapenko, Stearns enjoyed a straight-set victory in the first round, beating Katerina Sinikova 7-6 (7), 6-2, for her first ever Grand Slam main draw victory.
