Jannik Sinner will be hoping he can do something he has never done before when he faces Roman Safiullin in west London on Tuesday. The Italian is the world No.8, reaching the ranking for the first time in April earlier this year and holding it for the draw at Wimbledon, but he is yet to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam. In his previous 14 main draw appearances at Grand Slams, not including this year’s Wimbledon, Sinner has seen just four make it to the quarter-finals – one in each of the Grand Slams.

Last year’s Wimbledon ended in the quarter-finals as Sinner was beaten by eventual winner Novak Djokovic despite taking the first two sets. So far this year, Sinner has dropped just one set in his four matches en route to the quarter-finals and he is yet to meet a seeded player. Argentines Juan Manuel Cerundolo and Diego Schwartzmann were beaten in straight sets in the first and second round respectively, while Frenchman Quentin Halys took the first set before losing 3-1. And in the fourth round, Daniel Elahi Galan offered little resistance as Sinner claimed a 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-3 victory.

It’s another unseeded player in the quarter-finals with Safiullin currently ranked 92nd in the world and in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time. In fact, it’s the first time he has made it past the second round, and he had only been in the first round twice since 2021 – with both occasions coming at the Australian Open.

No one will have expected the 25-year-old to make it past the first round as Safiullin was drawn against 20th seed Roberto Bautista Agut, but he twice came from a set down to claim a five-set victory for one of the big early upsets. Things were slightly easier for Safiullin in the next rounds with Corentin Moutet and Guido Pella both beaten in straight sets. Last time out, Safiullin once again had to come from behind but this time the job was done in four sets, with the 25-year-old beating 26th seed Denis Shapovalov 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3.

Prediction: Jannik Sinner in three sets
