Jannik Sinner will be hoping to build on what has been a good 2023 so far as he prepares for his second round match at the French Open. Although the Australian Open ended in the first round for Sinner, he did reach the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Masters and Monte-Carlo Masters, as well as the Miami Open final — only losing to Daniil Medvedev at the latter.
In 2022, Sinner reached the fourth round of the French Open for the third year running, but exited there once again, losing to seventh seed Andrey Rublev — though he had to retire in the third set with the scores 1-1. So far at Roland Garros, Sinner has made like work of Alexandre Muller in the first round, winning 6-1, 6-4, 6-1.
Daniel Altmaier has only made it past the first round of a Grand Slam once in his career, in six attempts, with five-straight exits from the start of last year. However, the one time he has made it further than one match came in the French Open in 2020 as he made it to the fourth round as a qualifier before losing to Pablo Carreno Busta.
It’s been a bit of an odd year for Altmaier who, on top of a first-round exit of the Australian Open, has also gone out early in Miami and Italy but did made it to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open. Like Sinner, Altmaier enjoyed a straight-set victory in the first round of the 2023 French Open, beating Marc-Andrea Husler 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
