Andy Murray continues his quest for a first singles title since 2019, at Indian Wells, a tournament he hasn’t historical done too well in. At the tournament for the first time since 2017, Murray has reached the quarter-finals on three occasions but usually bows out at the second round, meaning he has already beaten his average. But, of course, this Murray is different.
Fighting in each match, Murray entered Indian Wells in the first round and had to come from a set down to beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-4. Things were slightly more straightforward in the second round, with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Lucky Loser Radu Albot.
It’s an all-British affair in the third round with Jack Draper enjoying his time at the top table after stepping up into the ATP Masters 1000 circuit last year. His best performance game in the Canadian Open as Draper reached the quarter-finals, but in 2023 he is taking part at Indian Wells for the first time.
Like Murray, Draper entered the tournament in the first round and routinely beat qualifier Leandro Riedi in straight sets. That victory set up Draper’s first all-Brit match of the tournament, against 24th-seed Dan Evans. But there wasn’t too much of a contest in that match either, with Draper winning 6-4, 6-2.
