The 2022 Davis Cup knockouts kicked off in Malaga on Tuesday as Australia took down the Netherlands to book their place in the semi-finals. Croatia face Spain on Wednesday afternoon to see who will join the Aussies on their side of the bracket, while USA and Italy lock horns for a chance to face either Germany or Canada.
Italy topped Group A in the qualifiers with a perfect 3-0 record, taking down Croatia, Sweden and Argentina. A one-time winner of the Davis Cup way back in 1976, the co-host nation will be itching to take their group-stage form into the knockouts and attempt to end a near half-century wait for international title glory.
USA finished second in a tight Group D, claiming a 2-1 record in which they beat Great Britain and Kazakhstan but lost to the Netherlands. USA have a strong team with recent ATP semi-finalist Taylor Fritz and US Open semi-finalist Frances Tiafoe, while Italy recently lost 2021 Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini to injury.
