England will be hoping for their first Nations League win of 2022 when they face off against Italy at the San Siro on Friday evening (7:45pm UK time).
Gareth Southgate’s side go into Friday’s game against Italy knowing that three points is a must if they want to avoid relegation to League B. The Three Lions are yet to pick up a win in Group A3, drawing two and losing two of their opening four matches, including a 4-0 demolition by Hungary last time out.
Italy also go into the game on the back of a bad result, after goals from Joshua Kimmich, Ilkay Gundogan, Thomas Muller and two from Timo Werner helped Germany to a 5-2 win over Roberto Mancini’s side in Mönchengladbach.

Italy team news
Italy will be without PSG midfielder Marco Verratti, who misses the game through injury, while both Lorenzo Pellegrini and Matteo Politano have withdrawn from the squad.
Ciro Immobile will be looking to bring his impressive club form onto the international stage after scoring four goals and providing four assists in his last seven games across all competitions for Lazio, while West Ham’s record signing Gianluca Scamacca will be hoping to put his poor start to life in the Premier League behind him and score his first goal for the national side.
England team news
Jordan Pickford misses out for the Three Lions, so either Aaron Ramsdale or Nick Pope will get the chance to prove they should be England’s No.1 for this winter’s World Cup in Qatar.
Eric Dier could make his first international start since 2020, while Harry Maguire, who has played just 10 minutes of Premier League football since Manchester United’s 4-0 defeat to Brighton at the start of August, will be hoping for a better showing for England.
Former Italy centre-back Giorgio Chiellini was sympathetic towards Maguire’s situation and backed his fellow centre-back to come good.
“I am sad for Maguire’s situation because he is a good player,” Chiellini told The Times.
“They require too much of him. Just because they paid £80 million for him, he has to be the best in the world every match? It’s not right. The value of the market is dependent on many aspects you can’t control. It’s not your fault.
“Him and [John] Stones are a good duo. OK, Maguire maybe is not Rio Ferdinand but he’s good enough. With this situation it’s not helping [England] to do the best. If you want to win the World Cup it’s impossible to do it with some problems in the key players, and for sure Maguire is one of the key players of the team.”
The LAFC centre-back was also full of praise for another one of England’s defenders.
“I love Kyle Walker,” he said. “He is unbelievable. I don’t know how it’s possible to be so fast, so strong. He could do the 100 metres against jaguars, maybe, because he is something fantastic.”
Scoreline prediction: Italy 1-1 England
