Ireland vs Tonga Preview

Ireland will have been really pleased to come through their opening test against Romania with flying colours. Twelve tries were run in by the Irish, it is their record win in World Cup competition. The aspect that will have pleased Andy Farrell the most though will have been their response to an early Romanian try, and the fact that Johnny Sexton got some rugby minutes under his belt following six months out of action.

The test becomes much more stern for the Irish now though. Tonga’s squad contains four former All Blacks and an Australian test cap winner, all of whom are supported by the best that the rugby loving island has to offer.

Tonga are ranked 15th in the world, the lowest of the Pacific Islands, but always build up to the World Cup tournaments by bringing in their key players. However, their last win against a Tier 1 side was back in 2016 against Scotland, and they have lost both test matches against Ireland previously by a total differential of -44.

This Irish side will probably be rotated somewhat for this clash, but carries more than enough strength in depth to be able to handle that from Tonga. The battle will be fierce up front, but Ireland have the organisation and confidence to see off Tonga with some ease.
