Delhi Capitals can book their place in the IPL playoffs with a win over bottom side Mumbai Indians on Saturday.

After a a 17-run win over Punjab Kings earlier this week, the Capitals know victory will clinch them a place in the final four for the fourth successive season.

Mumbai have won the IPL title three times in the last five seasons but sit rooted to the bottom of the table with just six points from their 13 matches so far.

It means the Indians are out of playoff contention altogether, but they could play a key role in determining who will join Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants in the knockout stages.

Match prediction: Capitals to edge tight contest

Expect runs. Mumbai Indians are refusing to let their 2022 campaign fizzle out, and Rohit Sharma proved they still have runs in them with his highest score of the season (48) in Tuesday’s narrow defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad, playing a leading role in an opening stand of 95 en route to 190/7.

Though Sharma has failed to score a half century this season, he has posted three scores in the 40s. One of those knocks came against Saturday’s opponents in their first meeting back in March, with the skipper hitting 41 off 32 balls to top score for Mumbai.

For the Capitals, who top scored with 215 against KKR this season, David Warner has been in fine nick. Only Jos Buttler and KL Rahul have scored more in the IPL this term, with the Australian averaging 53.38 at a strike rate of over 150.

Meanwhile, Sharma faced a backlash after failing to throw in Arjun Tendulkar for the Hyderabad game. The Mumbai captain had vowed to “look at certain players with an eye on next year”, but did not include Tendulkar as part of his rotation despite attention already shifting to the 2023 campaign.

With Arjun’s father Sachin playing a mentor role with the franchise, the pressure is surely cranked up on Sharma to give Arjun a look in as the curtain comes down on Mumbai’s season. If you like the narrative, Tendulkar junior is 100/1 to light up the match with a top score.
